LOCAL SUCCESS!

Congratulations to the village of Olveston in Olveston Parish on winning South Gloucestershire Village of the Year 2009 in the Small Village category.   The competition is run by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) with sponsorship from Calor. This is the third time the village has won its category.  Judging was based on four areas: community feel, sustainability, communication and business.  Geoff Chappell, Chair of Olveston Parish Hall Management Committee, who co-ordinated Olveston's entry, emphasises the team effort put in by the whole village and the vibrant amount of activity happening locally.  He highlighted the presence of the butchers, the bakers and the pub, thriving pre-schools, a very good primary school, and thriving Brownies, Beavers, Scouts and Guides groups in the village.  He also paid tribute to the huge contribution made to the village by many residents giving their services voluntarily to a wide range of causes. Olveston was presented with its prize at an awards event at Tyntesfield in mid-November.

Olveston Parish Hall

Olveston Parish Hall is located between Olveston & Tockington on Upper Tockington Road, next to the tennis club and children's playground.  Dating back to 1901, it is a large hall comprising three main rooms: the main hall (approx. 14m x 7m), the jubilee room (approx. 8m x 4m) and the committee room (approx. 7m x 4m).  The recently decorated main hall has a stage and, being licensed, is an ideal venue for holding parties and social events, accommodating over 100 people.  The smaller committee room is available for meetings and opens onto the recently created garden area and kitchen facilities.  The hall is available for hire by the hour, evening or day, with special rates for children's parties.

The hall is home to the Olveston Pre-School and is well supported by the two villages, hosting a range of social events.

You can find out much more about the Hall - including its history, its current facilities, booking arrangements and hire costs, and the details and minutes of the Hall's management committee - by going to Olveston Parish Hall's own website, available here.   There's a lot going on at present, so check out their website.
